“I will give you a new heart, a new spirit within you,
for I will be your strength.”
from “Deep Within” by David Haas (#399 in Gather Comprehensive)
Today's readings are asking us to take a good look at ourselves. We are like that tree that Jesus speaks of in the parable in today's Gospel. It is alive but it bears no fruit. It should be cut down. The man responsible for the tree asks the owner to give it one more year. If after that, if there is no fruit, it should be cut down.
The parable poses and interesting question: what would we do if we only had one year left to live? One year to make up for the wrongs and opportunities missed? How extremely important would that year be?
One of the purposes of Lent is to provide time to pause and reflect on the many facets or our lives. Every Lenten season is a chance to fertilize our tree and see how we can become more fruitful. We are not being called to merely exist…to just stay out of sin. We are being called to continually grow into truly loving people.
No matter what we do with our lives, God loves us. Yet, love is essentially mutual, it is a two-way process, it is a bonding. This love is only fully completed in us when we become genuinely loving and caring people who love both God and others in our words and actions. What beautiful fruit to bear.
