WHY DO CATHOLICS...? ARCHIVE

What are Sacraments?

The word Sacrament comes from the Latin word sacramentum which means "a sign of the sacred." Many things, even a beautiful sunset, can bring one to a deep awe of the sacred and in the church would be termed a “sacramental moment.” The sunset itself could be seen as “sacramental,” something that reminds us of the sacred. However, there are seven official sacraments recognized in the church—moments of life that celebrate God’s grace and saving presence in a special way. In each sacrament, the grace of that sacrament is meant to assist the person in living out the call of that sacrament to the fullest. Sacraments are rites (ceremonies) that point to what is sacred, significant and important for Christians. They are outward signs of what God is doing within.

The Church teaches that Christ himself instituted the sacraments, for each sacrament finds its roots in New Testament teaching. The Church further teaches that the sacraments are also considered “actions of Christ” for it is Christ himself that perpetuates the grace and redemptive action of the sacrament. The Seven Sacraments can be categorized into groups:

  • Sacraments of Initiation (by which a person is fully initiated into the Catholic faith): Baptism, Confirmation and Holy Eucharist.
  • Sacraments of Healing: Reconciliation and Anointing of the Sick
  • Sacraments of Vocation: Marriage and Holy Orders

Ideally, all sacraments should be celebrated with appropriate scripture readings and, if at all possible, with the presence, support and prayers of the believing community.
