COMMUNITY AND GLOBAL OUTREACH

The work of the Christian Service Commission includes working to meet the needs our own parishioners, the needs of those in our community, and to address issues of peace and justice in the world at large.

Active community and global outreach groups and activities at St. Thomas a'Becket include:

• We have an Advent Tree in which parishioners purchase gifts for people in need.
• We hold blood drives at St. Thomas a'Becket to help the American Red Cross replenish the dangerously low blood supply.
• We collect Bunny Bags of Easter goodies to be distributed to children in need.
• We share a special relationship with the Capuchin Soup Kitchen.
• The Be a Buddy Coat Drive collects new and gently used coats for distribution to those in need.
• The Disability Concerns Committee strives for full inclusion of persons with disabilities in the life of the parish
• The Disaster Relief Committee guides our parish response to natural disasters.
• The Funeral Luncheon team prepares and serves a beautiful luncheon to the family and friends of a parishioner who has died.
• We support our homebound parishioners and their families.
• The Knights of Columbus are lay apostles for the promotion of the teachings of Jesus Christ and supporters of the Church. Its founding principles are charity, unity and fraternity. The Knights of Columbus is for Catholic men, aged 18 and older.
• Our Meal Ministry team provides meals to parishioners in need.
• We staff the Nursery during select Masses on Sunday.
• The Peace and Justice Committee advocates for a more just and peaceful world according to Catholic Social Teachings.
• Deacon Jim Ward coordinates visits to the Huron Valley Women's Prison for our Prison Ministry.
• The Pro-Life Committee works within the parish to teach respect for all human life from conception to natural death, and organizes and advocates for its protection.
• The School Supplies Drive collects school supplies for children in need in our immediate and extended communities.
• The St. Vincent de Paul Society leads women and men to join together to grow spiritually by offering person-to-person service to those who are needy and suffering. They collect non-perishable food in the red wagons and use the top hats to collect money after Masses. The money is used to support area food banks and those in need.
