PARISH NURSES AND COMMUNITY HEALTH

  • The Parish Nurses prepared a resource guide for free or low cost health resources in our community. This document has information, phone numbers and details about how to qualify for assistance. You can also find information about nursing homes.
  • St. Thomas a'Becket is requesting that at least one professional from the medical community notify the ushers of their presence at each Mass in case an emergency should arise. You can sign in at the desk by Father Pat's office with the Ushers and Eucharistic Ministers. Your name and location in church is all that is required so you can be contacted if needed. We pray that you will consider volunteering as a way to fulfill your Christian service in the St. Thomas a'Becket community.

The Parish Nursing Group is comprised of volunteer nurses who are currently employed and licensed. Parish nursing is focused on health promotion, disease prevention and health counselors. It is not embrace a medical model of care or invasive practices such as blood drawing, medical treatments or maintenance of intravenous products. We have a planning meeting once a month (from September through May) on Sunday after 10:00 AM Mass.

Parish Nurses take blood pressures, measure body fat and conduct health education classes throughout the year. Several nurses monitor blood pressures at the STA 50 group, Knights of Columbus, Social Sunday, Church picnic and health screening events. We are available to the church staff members as resource agents for referrals in the community. Nurses share their expertise and write health education articles for the church bulletin. We offer CPR classes, designed an emergency response plan and collected funds for the automated external defibrillator (AED). Each nurse commits to offering prayers for the church members and nurse ministry on the first Sunday of the month. We also plan Social outings twice a year.

New members are welcome. Please sign up with the office and leave your name, number, address and e-mail or email the Christian Service chair at csc@abecket.org with your contact information.
